Remote Working: Top 10 Tips on How to Stay Motivated

By Verity Hawson

It can sometimes be a struggle to keep motivation levels high when working remotely, whether that be when working by yourself from home, or in a co-working space with a team based elsewhere. Here we share some top tips that if followed can go a long way to help you staying motivated and being the best you can be at work:

1. Routine: make sure you have a clear structure to your day with a routine that you stick to, including set hours at which you start & finish, e.g. 9am to 5pm. Get ready for the day as if you were going to the office, wake-up early, get showered, dress professionally.  If you look good, you feel good!

2. Fresh Air & Exercise: starting work having had some fresh air or exercise can be a great way to ensure a productive day.  Build this in to your day, or as soon as you finish work. Some suggestions would be: have a brisk walk outside i.e. to buy a baguette, go for a jog, do some yoga in the park or swim a few lengths – 20 minutes a day of sustained, breathless exercise keeps energy levels high, shakes off the lows, and boosts creative thinking. It also helps you sleep better at night, and a healthy body = a healthy mind!

3. Support: whether working alone from home, or in a co-working / shared-office space, make sure there are people in your network that you can turn to to talk about work, i.e. the highs, the lows, the queries, the concerns… you should always have someone you can turn to for support.

4. Perks: allow yourself a special treat every so often, e.g. get yourself a coffee and a croissant on a Friday before you start the day, or buy a bunch of flowers to brighten up your desk.
