An established, multi-award-winning independent trade publisher is looking for a mid-weight creative Designer to join its Art Department. You'll bring a stand-out portfolio, a passion for innovative design and a love of books, paired with an eye for detail and excellent typographic skills. Working as part of a small, collaborative team, you'll create exceptional covers and interiors across a wide range of genres, from children's illustrated and reference publishing to general trade non-fiction.
The role
As a key part of the Art Department, the Designer creates smart, creative solutions to briefs and manages a busy project list to ensure consistency, high standards and strong brand awareness. You'll design and art-direct covers and interiors across multiple genres, prepare clear visual presentations, and deliver print-ready artwork to deadline.
What you'll be doing
·Design covers and interiors (including illustrated and template-based formats where needed).
·Commission and art-direct illustrators/designers, managing feedback through to final sign-off.
·Create marketing, sales and rights assets, plus strong visuals for internal meetings.
·Keep projects on track: follow critical paths, maintain artworking standards, and flag risks early.
About you
You'll have a stand-out portfolio, excellent typographic skills and a calm, organised approach to working to deadlines. You'll be confident collaborating with editors, marketers and external creatives, and comfortable juggling multiple projects while maintaining high production standards.

·A strong portfolio showing innovative cover and/or interior design for print, from brief to final artwork.
·Excellent typography and layout skills, with sharp attention to detail.
·A design degree (or equivalent practical experience) and confidence working across both colour interiors and covers.
·Strong communication and organisational skills; calm and efficient when working to tight deadlines.
·Competence with Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, plus solid file management and pre-press awareness.
·Able to collaborate with and (where needed) commission/art-direct freelancers and illustrators, guiding feedback through to sign-off.
About the publisher
Our client is an established independent trade publisher based in London with a broad, multi-imprint list. Their publishing spans children's illustrated and reference, and a strong general trade non-fiction programme (including biography and history), alongside specialist areas. The Designer will join a small in-house team and work closely with editorial, marketing and production, as well as a network of freelance creatives and suppliers. Hybrid working is offered, with two days in the office as a guideline.
