Brookes University - Working in Publishing Day - The next generation of publishing talent!

On Tuesday this week, Inspired Selection attended the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (Brookes University) ‘Working in Publishing day’. This annual event is always well attended and this year about 60 post grad and 3rd year undergraduates students attended, meeting with representatives of around 35 publishing and industry related companies.

This day is a great opportunity for the students to ask questions directly to people with experience in the publishing sector and to learn how they are going to be successful in applying for the jobs they have been aiming for throughout their studies. Many of the students will qualify with their Masters in Publishing and this day can be the start of their ‘search’ for that perfect role with a publishing company.

Although it is not directly a ‘recruitment’ exercise, it is an excellent opportunity for Inspired Selection to offer some initial guidance about careers in Trade, Education, Academic and Professional sectors, which is where the majority of this future industry talent will be working.

With some changes to this year’s programme, the event concentrated on the students ‘speed-dating’ for 15 minutes with as many of the company representatives as possible. The ‘speed-dating’ has always been found to be a real success each year.

With representatives from many of the main Trade, Education and Academic publishers present, the students were treated to a wide variety of opinions and it was great to see this event being supported by these leading global publishers.

Although many of the students felt that they are ‘aiming’ for careers within Trade editorial, it was great to see that quite a number also had strong interest in Rights, Marketing and Production areas too!

The event was well organised by the team of lecturers at OICPS and Inspired Selection was delighted to be involved and looks forward to returning for the next Working in Publishing event in 2018.
